In many communities the local press plays an important role in communicating to the public the opportunity that our work provides for bringing to the surface key issues, resources, opportunities, challenges and local advice around problem solving and health status improvement. A series of twenty-four articles from the Standard-Times in San Angelo, Texas (click below on the name to read) is an excellent example of how the press not only reported on the events, but was an effective ally in getting the word and facilitating the dialogue we desired with consumers, providers, and community leaders. We thought you might find the series of interest. As other articles become available, we will add to the list:

What was done by Charles Wiltraut:
  • I conducted a strategic planning meeting with the Texas Association of Community Health Centers. The Executive Director, Deputy Director and Community Development Staff planned with me the strategy for disseminating the vision of 100% Access and Zero Disparities in the state.
  • I worked with TACHC and The San Angelo Task Force on Healthcare for the Medically Underserved to organize a series of community discussion groups.
  • Secondary data were analyzed and compiled for the Task Force as part of our work in the community.
  • I have provided follow up facilitation and strategic planning to the Task Force around the development of an integrated financing and service delivery system for uninsured/underserved persons.
Outcomes:
  • Community discussion groups drew over 500 people.
  • Broad community education on the issues and challenges of the uninsured in the community and in Texas.
  • Report on the process circulated to over 38,000 households through the San Angelo Standard Times.
  • Task Force developing the necessary components for a system of care for the underserved.
  • Task Force secures involvement from State Representative Robert Junell.
  • Application to new HRSA Community Access Program.

Brownsville/Cameron County
Purpose:
To provide the NHSC with data describing the impact of the program on individuals and communities, through an assessment approach that combined qualitative and quantitative data collection.

  • National Health Service Corps

Outcomes:
  • Report provided to Brownsville Community Health Center.
  • Brownsville Community Health Center featured as part of NHSC 25th Anniversary Conference and re-authorization effort.

To demonstrate myCommunity and Population Health Status Assessment tools and techniques to Field Office staff of the Health Resources and Services Administration.

  • South Plains Health Provider Organization (SPHPO)

  • Health Resources and Services Administration

Outcomes:
  • Report provided to South Plains Health Provider Organization.
  • New director introduced to the community via the discussion group process.
  • Opportunity to stem loss of Maternal and Child Health dollars from the state health department identified.
  • Educational materials and information provided to SPHPO from Texas Department of Health.
  • SPHPO pursued development of an integrated network with two other community health centers.
