PREVENTION
Magazine has developed a set of guidelines for screening
procedures (The Prevention Index) that were used to
calculate the percent of women who received regular
screenings. For example, The Prevention Index guidelines
prescribe that a woman should have an annual professional
breast exam. According to this survey, 68% of women
have had an annual breast exam within the last year.
Women with above low income were more likely than
those with low income or poverty level incomes to
report having an annual exam by a health care professional
(73% vs. 59% and 45%, respectively). Women who reported
their health status as excellent or very good/good
were more likely than those who reported their health
as fair/poor to have an annual breast exam (72% and
69% vs. 57%). Women with Commercial/HMOs were more
likely than those with Medicare, Medicaid, or those
with no insurance to report having a professional
breast examination(75% vs. 64%, 51%, and 52%). Women
who have never been without insurance were more likely
than those who have had lapses in coverage of two
months or longer to report having annual breast exams
by a health care professional (71% vs. 59%). (Charts
24 and 25)
