Projects with Health Philanthropy

I worked with the Caring for Colorado Foundation, a conversion foundation established in 1999 with the proceeds of the sale of Colorado Blue Cross/Blue Shield. I developed, implemented and reported to the Board the results of an intensive, six-month, statewide assessment -- that incorporated community meetings, interviews with key stakeholders in the state and a web-based survey -- on the health issues and needs in the state of Colorado. I then worked with the Program Committee and the Board of Directors to develop a strategic plan and funding priorities based on the assessment data.

I worked on a project with the Washington State Hospital Association and Washington Health Foundation to develop statewide capacity for community partnership development and community health information systems. That project resulted in the creation of two community partnerships, and a statewide health status assessment:

  • In Pacific County (Washington) a community health status assessment was conducted through a Partnership for Community Health, which has subsequently addressed issues identified through that assessment ranging from the lack of dental health services to special needs of an southeast Asian immigrant population.
  • In Spokane County, Washington, the Health Improvement Partnership, initially sponsored by all four hospitals in the county and the local public health agency, conducted a health status assessment and has begun a neighborhood-focused process of developing health improvement interventions.
  • The four hospitals also conducted a health status assessment of their 8,000 employees as part of their planning a Physician-Hospital-Organization.

My staff have worked with multiple conversion and other philanthropic organizations to conduct assessments and strategically plan to implement strategies based on the results. Foundations that have been part of our clientele include: San Angelo Health Foundation, The Duke Endowment and Dorothy Rider Pool Health Care Trust.
